I wrote a review on the "Condura" site about not being into westerns until I saw it. Then turned immediately to this one. Once again, because Rita Hayworth is in the lead. This is even better than "They Came to Condura." Hayworth gets Spanish as a gypsy when she's dancing and really shows how well she moves. Her role is worth the entire film. It's mind blowing how great an actress and dancer she is. Doesn't seem to matter which type of character she's playing, she becomes her and takes me right along with her wherever she goes. That's what I want out of a great film. To be totally absorbed in the characters. That's how I measure the quality of the film, too. If it doesn't take my mind off of what's going on in my own life and draw me into the scene with the actors, it's just not a classic. This one definitely is.

Director King Vidor brings out the authentic ethnicity of Rita Hayworth as Carmen. Although she was Spanish, playing a gypsy in a western setting, with Glenn Ford playing Don Jose Mizarabengoa, is enough to draw out that ever so tantilizing latina dancer. Carmen's a petty thief, survivor extraordinaire, ravishing, and will dance up the dust for her supper. Don Jose's an outlaw on the lam who's become embittered and trigger-tempered. The intensity of seductiveness between Ford and Hayworth is hotter than the desert. As a duo, they could play in a wide variety of character types. For this reason, it's not surprising that their on screen chemistry works just as well in this film as it had in many others. Maybe this isn't a classic. Time will tell. Regardless, it'll appeal to lovers of westerns, Hayworth's subtly sexy dancing and the famous Ford-Hayworth combo. Enjoy!

Saw this movie for the first time yesterday on TCM & enjoyed it very much. I'm a big fan of both actors & both were incredible but Rita was really something. Rita Hayworth is definitely the queen of sexiness in Hollywood.
