This film is highly overrated. Quite the sleeper. Perhaps it should have been released as a silent rather than a "talkie".

I can't remember the exact Godard film, but it was one of the early ones and one of the characters (played by Belmondo, I think, but again I'm not sure) says that Maurice Chevalier is the "stupidest of all Frenchmen." I heartily concur.

A charming musical. Outstanding art direction, costumes and sound, some really great songs. Suave performance from Maurice Chevalier, good support from Lupino Lane and Lillian Roth. Stylishly light direction from Ernst Lubitsch. Jeannette McDonald's performance is a bit wooden though. Overall though it is a fine film.
