  • Did Leonard Maltin even see this movie?

It's a fascinating mystery. And it keeps you guessing. The magical atmosphere of the cozy cottage and small puzzling details leading up to a dramatic end. Not to mention the wonderful characters. Makes for a truly entertalning movie

I discovered "Love Letters" last week when TCM broadcast it, and was astonished at the depth and power, and sweetness, of this romantic charmer. How in the world had I missed this before? It was probably the sappy title. The screenplay is remarkably smart, introducing main characters with true depth and motivation that is subtle and revealed slowly over time. Joseph Cotton is superb, not a note wrong, and Jennifer Jones pulls off a very demanding role. Secondary leads are adequate; all the character actors are marvelous. The story is original and haunting. The viewer hopes for a happy ending and ultimately gets it, but the screenwriter and director keeps you captivated, and in suspense, every step of the way. "Love Letters" is an undiscovered gem, in my opinion. (Leonard's reviews are 90% spot on, but in this case, he might want to take a second look, as I think he fails to note quality that IS there, and is unfairly dismissive.)

Leonards review is just his & I respect it however when you have a cast such as jones, cotton, cooper you need nothing else. I view love letters everytime its on. Superb direction love black & white movies. I give it 5 stars

Fine acting, intriguing story, and an excellent screenplay by Ayn Rand P.S. Leonard Maltin's review is all wet, on this one. (Perhaps it results from political bias.)

One of my all time favorite romantic movies- Joseph and Jennifer capture your heart when they speak to each other in this film. So moving , and the very essence of true love, only in the movies could you capture such a romance! PLEASE, PLEASE RELEASE THIS MOVIE ON DVD. We have waited far too long for a DVD to be released.

I first saw this movie on TCM when they aired it for "Summer of the Stars"..... This is a great love story as well as a suspensful murder mistery.... I love this classic and would love for it to be released on dvd very soon... Definetly a gem that is lost in the archives somewhere.... I was hoping for TCM to air it again and have suggested it many times.. I was thinking that they have it in their library, but I have read that they rent movies to air... I hope this is not true.... Would love, love to see this again as well as buy it when it/if it gets released on dvd....

I eagerly awaited the airing of "Love Letters" as part of the Jennifer Jones collection and I was well rewarded for the wait. Thank you TCM for bringing back one of my favorite movies. Yes, it's dated by today's standards, but sometimes you just have to enjoy a tale well told. Jennifer Jones may be in her 90s now, but for me she will always be that ethereal beauty, Singleton. Jim

I've loved watching Jennifer Jones movies since seeing her in "Portrait of Jennie" umpteen years ago. So glad to see it on the schedule last night, sandwiched between two excellent pieces I'd never seen -- "Love Letters" and "Carrie." Her performances seem so effortless. Thanks, TCM -- you're the best!

I really only knew Jennifer Jones from her turn in "the Towering Inferno." Ms Jones goes flying out the door of a outdoor elevator after a big explosion. Tisk Tisk. Only Fred Astaire seems to care. Sad. Anyway so gorgeous was this lady. Her acting is amazing in "Love Letters." She's so haunting, magnetic & really sexy in that wonderful old fashioned 1940's way. She's 90 years old now little too old for me but carry on you are great!

This came on tonight as part of Jennifer Jones day and all I can say is thanks, TCM, for showing this rare gem! Amazingly tight and masterfully layered as a love story and murder mystery, it has to be one of the all-time amnesia films. The traditional story arc of boy-meets-girl is turned on its head; just try to guess where the plot is going the first time you see it.

Great cast, ultra romantic love story was a little too melodramatic for my taste. It is well produced and done. Very confined and claustrophobic.

As young girls, my friends and I would watch this movie whenever it came on. When one of us saw it scheduled, we would call the group together and watch it at someone's house. It's just one of those movies that you don't forget and I think Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotten are very good in their roles. We'd love to see this on DVD, we'd get the group back together on a regular basis!

I saw this movie when I was just a kid. I thought it was hauntingly beautiful. I never forgot it,and it stayed with me through the years.. When I did see it again, many years later, it was as I remembered...still hauntingly beautiful, a love story, a murder mystery, and two of my favorite actors. I hope this can be a home movie, as I'd like to see it again....and again. This is an example of how movies back then outshine todays movies!!!... no brazen sex on screen, no swear words....a really good movie doesn't need all that to be unforgettable!!!!!

  • Better than "Portrait of Jennie"

When I first saw this movie I remember just saying wow and falling in love with everything about this movie. The actors with this amazing connection on screen, to the music that went along with it. That summer I watched it every time it came on till I finally put it on tape. I looked long and hard to find the music. And I watched everything else I could find with Jennifer Johnes and Joesph Cotton. When I left for college out of state I lost my copy and have been sad ever since. I would love to have this on Dvd and to share it with friends to let them see how great of a movie it still is.

  • A wonderful love story mystery.

I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it. It remains one of my all-time choices. Jennifer Jones was the epitome of wartime beauty and this movie is one of her best. Joseph Cotton and she are a great couple on screen, appearing together in several of my favorite movies. I would love to also see Jennifer Jones movies put on DVD. What a wonderful actress!

What a wonderful movie aired by TCM. Awesome experience. Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones were, as always, so perfect together. They had unmatched chemestry on the screen as far as I am concerned. I would love to see this movie released to DVD soon! I am sure it would sell really well.

Thank you for airing the movie LOVE LETTERS. I use to watch this movie as a young girl on regular television. This movie and others like it started my facination with the events of WWII and caused me to read everything I could get my hands on to learn more about people lives during that time including my parents. Joseph Cotton seemed so calm and patient with Jennifer Jones who was so beautiful.
