Mary Callahan works as a hostess in the model home of real estate salesman Wilbur Babcock. One morning, she finds Jeff Langan asleep in the model's bedroom. He offers to leave if she makes him a cup of coffee, and while he drinks it, Mary falls in love with him, although she would rather die than admit it. Jeff tells Mary that he will return later to take her to dinner, and she plans to leave the house before he returns. Before she can implement this plan, however, Babcock returns, and the Kesters, prospective customers, arrive to look at the house. After everyone leaves, Jeff is waiting for Mary with a corsage. Pretending that she is a famous food critic, Jeff gets them into a food show, where they eat their fill. Jeff continues to visit Mary in the house. One night while they listen to the radio, they hear about a contest for the happiest married couple and fantasize about what they would say if they entered. After they write it down, Mary and Jeff quarrel and she tells him she never wants to see him again. Millie, the maid, sees the disgarded entry, and thinking that Mary forget to mail it, sends it off to the contest. When Mary and Jeff's entry wins, Mary looks everywhere for Jeff with no success. Just before she gives up, Jeff appears. He tells her he has gone to work for his father and wants to marry her. Bisbee, the owner of the company that held the contest, plans to visit the winning couple with his two spinster sisters Emma and Lydia. The only problem is that neither Jeff nor Mary can remember what they said in their entry. They improvise, but before they can claim the money, the parents of the children they "borrowed" as part of their front demand their return, and the Kesters arrive to look at the house again. Bisbee threatens to accuse them of fraud, but Emma points out that they would be a laughing stock, so they decide to make the couple get married. Jeff returns with a judge and they finally marry, planning to use the winning money to buy the house that Mary loves so much.
