Did anyone else note the irony that the group of boys who marched over dressed in black cloaks and hats singing "Kyrie Eleison" (Lord have mercy) over and over were largely the same ones who turned into the warpainted, blood-lusting savages? Ralph and Piggy, wise beyond their years, the voices of reason and sanity, end up as the savage mob's victims. A first-rate film that should be seen by everyone, especially those interested in group dynamics and mob psychology.
This movie was big boomer generation fare with the title " Lord of the Flies " as the translation of "Beezlebub"- the gross comrade of Satan- forever on their mass mind!
Great Adaptation of the Book
A faithful film adaptation of the book by William Golding. The boy who plays "Piggy" is superb, and it is impossible to imagine him differently if you read the book after seeing the movie. Highly recommended.
The movie really helped me understand the book, and identify with the characters in the book. THe movies is definitely better than the book.
1963 Lord of the Flies
- Eric F
The book Lord of the Flies was compulsary read when I was in high school and for my money the 1963 "original" Lord of the Flies is far superior to the remake version in the 1990's. The child actors in this version are brilliant, even though they are mostly unrecognizable names. If you loved the book then you should love this movie version...definitely a must see. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.Eric F.Vancouver, Canada
Lord of the Flies
- Dashiell Barnes
The earliest adaptation of the William Golding novel is shown in this film. I liked the black-&-white cinemotography used to capture the eerie flora & fuana. The sound of the jungles was also impressive. What I loathed about this film were the flat characterizations of the young characters, they were dull & not all that interesting. This was made-up by the extraordinary second half of the film where a majority of the boys turn wild & savage, killing pigs & eventually, each other. Even for me, that was terrifying to view. For the most part I was unsatisfied, but entertained. I give it a 2/5.
