Good film!

Surprisingly good performance by John Wayne here, as a Swede of all things! Thomas Mitchell is also stellar in his role. While not a great film, it is worth watching and it does keep your interest throughout. There are some good performances here by quite a few character actors who you will recognize immediately if you are a classic film buff.

WAVE AFTER WAVE TENSION

Your job: To get supplies across a U-Boat filled ocean and you've seen the next ship sink, in flames. You are one of the crew unable to act, except by those you see. Will your ship safely reach the crest of the next wave or quake due to a torpedo exploding in its fragile hull? Thomas Mitchell, Ward Bond, John Wayne and others from this familiar team of actors wonderfully portray these characters although John Wayne's character is not what you would expect. At sea, the tight crew, each with his own troubles, tries to carry on trying not to show the fear at every near encounter with death. On shore the face different demons that threaten every man who walks alone among the strangers. Will they all safely arrive at their destinations? Climb aboard and see!

The Long Voyage Home (1940)
- James Higgins
- 4/16/10
John Ford combined four of Eugene ONeill stories into this film. He does a great job directing and does exceptional developing the characters, as he usually does. The cinematography is stunning, the use of light and shadows is so effective. The score is superb. Good cast, although casting John Wayne is a Swede was a curious choice. Although Wayne doesnt hurt the overall effect of the film, he doesnt help it either. Thomas Mitchell, Barry Fitzgerald, Mildred Natwick and John Qualen stand out in the cast. A beautifully done film. The Long Voyage Home was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Ford elicits more from the gesture and tiniest detail than most accomplish in an entire film. Just a brilliant bittersweet ending to this film.
