Nick Bartaloni, a disillusioned and cynical boxer, hitchhikes to Los Angeles to recover the money his sister was holding for his retirement. (She committed suicide and gave the money to her lover, a drug addict.) On his way to the coast he meets Felicity, a nine-year-old girl abandoned by her alcoholic father, and they travel on together. Her view of the world is the opposite of Nick's; she believes in the goodness of people and when events prove too sad for her she looks at the world through translucent lollipop wrappers, which give everything a rosy hue. Nick's search for the money is unsuccessful, but his bitter outlook changes as he learns to see life through Felicity's eyes.
