Michael Arlen's novel was serialized in Hearst's International-Cosmopolitan in July 1928. According to Paramount script files at the AMPAS library, Arlen's novel was purchased on January 25, 1932 for 2,500. According to copyright records, some scenes were filmed on location in London at Kensington Gardens, Bond Street, Mayfair Street and Square and Berkeley Square. A Variety review notes that "this is the picture which reputedly convinced Paramount...that making films in England is a waste of a good many things, including money."
