Lily Christine Summerest is stranded on a country road when she is rescued by novelist Rupert Harvey, who invites her to stay the night at his home, as a storm is threatening her return to London. Rupert's wife Muriel is away that night, but Lily and Rupert innocently spend the evening talking. Lily reveals to Rupert her unhappy marriage to philandering Ivor Summerest, a national sports hero. Later, Lily and Muriel also become friends, and the Harveys and Lily are dining out when they see Ivor with Mrs. Abbey, a famous actress. Lily discounts Mrs. Abbey as just another one of Ivor's affairs and is shocked when her husband goes to Paris and sends her a telegram saying he is leaving her for the actress. Concerned about her reputation, Mrs. Abbey insists that Ivor divorce Lily on the grounds that she has been cheating on him with Rupert, an outright lie. Muriel believes the lie, however, and Rupert asks Lily to reconcile with Ivor so his marriage will not be destroyed. Lily asks a friend to be her co-respondent which would thereby clear Rupert's name and secure a divorce from Ivor, but her friend declines because he knows she loves Ivor. Lily walks home and is so overwrought that she does not see the bus that kills her.
