  • Kevin Anderson and Kim Novak star in Liebestraum

    • David Atkins
    • 8/6/08

A fine actor Kevin Anderson starred in this film directed by Mike Figgis which also marked the much anticipated return to the films by Kim Novak.Kim Novak's career deserves re appraisal, some of her performances were dismissed at the time of review and now seen today, they are astonishing, I call to mind 'Of Human Bondage', and 'Kiss Me Stupid', especially.Miss Novak and director Mike Figgis were said to clash repeatedly during the filming, and Figgis threatened to cut her part and he did, and the great Kim is reduced to grunting and groaning thru most of the film but even doing that she creates a memorable performance. MGM was going thru one of its periodic "being sold" sagas and this film was not promoted well and was only released in limited markets. Madonna was supposed to star but opted out because she did not understand the part, so was replaced by an young actress Pam Gidley. Kim Novak who usually hits the road promoting her films, as I recall ignored this film. Kevin Anderson, Kim Novak and Mike Figgis deserved better and I hope this film is seen on DVD at least.
