I like Hope the film actor, and he gave great radio, but TV-era got a little long in the tooth and his personal life is filled with enough to dispise Hope the Human Being. But breathing life into a Damon Runyan character was a brilliant decision and he could have followed this role into a series all of its own. These short stories about low lifes with everyman feelings are soon to be forgotten in moden day and we are lessor for it.They were written by a newsman, written for the masses and have a succinct style that would play fine in this sound-bite era. Like a chocolate covered pretzel, they are sweet, salty, crunchy and leaving you wanting another one.
Personally I can't watch any movie with Bob Hope, even the Road pictures. He has such an arrogance that I find very irritating.
- Jeff Boston
Hope is hilarious in "The Lemon Drop Kid," very popular when it was released, as was its "Silver Bells." The "Remember Mother on Christmas Day" scene is silly fun, as are scenes with him in drag. The Kid referring to some dopes as communists was a sign of the times (Red Scare at home and Red Reality abroad) and vintage Bob Hope, supreme supporter of both the free market system at home and our military personnel who defended freedom abroad - in the past (WW 2), the present (Korean War, 50-53), and the future (Vietnam and the Persian Gulf). He was a man of action who was exceptional in his contributions to both the film industry and our exceptional nation.
A lack of Hope
A lack of Hope wouldn't have hurt this movie, to me he is very seldom funny, and usuallydisgustingly arrogant.
The Lemon Drop Kid (1951)
- James Higgins
This is a very enjoyable and entertaining Bob Hope movie, there are plenty of laughs along the way thanks to a great screenplay. One of his better movies from the 1950's. Good supporting cast.
Lemon Drop Kid DVD
My family and I watch our VHS version of the movie every Christmas. I would like to upgrade to DVD as I have with all my other Christmas movies. And, I would like to see TCM play it during the Christms season each year. It is a classic.
