  • A incredible film that should be required viewing

This movie is a fantasy classic of the highest order. Peter S. Beagle, while best known for this work, has a great fan base and has been compared to the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien and other contemporaries. This fairy tale is more than a story about a unicorn. It tells of great love and the price of regret. It boasts of aspiring to be something others believe you not to be, and how "spells of seeming" abound everywhere. Truth, in the end, is the only thing that allows you to see and become what you truly are. The anachronisms in this movie, such as Capt. Cully inviting Schmendrick to, "have a taco" only add to the charm of this movie and allow it to be brought into modern times. Sweeping animation and moving music by the band America make this movie timeless and legendary within its time. Children will easily identify with the animation and cheer on the unicorn's final battle against the Red Bull, and adults will keenly understand the lesson of losing something dear for a higher purpose. This movie doesn't completely end, because as Schmendrick says, "There are no happy endings, because nothing ends." This movie deserves to be screened again and again to help new generations of fantasy lovers to understand that not all fairy tales end the same way, and for andults who love this film to know that it is still cherished as a great American animated fantasy classic.
