Although Jock Mahoney's character is listed as "Commander Harold Roberts" in the closing credits, he is referred to throughout the film as "Commander Alan Roberts." According to a September 1956 Hollywood Reporter article, the producers of The Land Unknown gained permission from the U.S. Department of Defense to use footage from the 1947 South Pole expedition of noted aviator and explorer Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957). Although Hollywood Reporter news items list actors John Bentley as a "co-star" and Steve Drexel as a reporter in the film, neither appears in the final picture.
