Ah, the fickle nature of politics in Ancient Rome with an ensemble cast. I felt that Brando, despite an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, was miscast as Marc Antony, the man who sets out to find Gielgud and Mason after they murder the title character, the latter of the duo having the most complex role. Won an Oscar for it's B/W art direction; this adaptation of Shakespeare's historical tragedy is quick- paced and enthralling. Well worth watching. I give it a 4/5.
The Ides of March
- Elise Lang
Most people believe the ides of March to be March the 15th.The night before, Brutus was contemplating the soothsayer's warning ('beware the ides of March') and asked Lucius if the next day was the Ides of March.Lucius replied, after checking the calendar, that 'March is wasted 15 days'.That would mean the ides of March, the day Ceasar was assassinated, was the 16th of March. If I am wrong, can someone please enlighten me?It is only a small point, but I have wondered about it for years.
What is the problem?
Why is it that so many people are afraid of Shakespeare? I suggest it is because the English teachers in high school are afraid of him. I remember a teacher in my high school, when faced with having to present Pope and The Rape of the Lock to eleventh graders, went extremely pale and the whole thing was a bust. There was life and literature before 1920, folks! This film of Julius Caesar is almost universally recognized as one of the finest cinematic presentations of Shakespeare, and in my view is far superior to either of Zeffirelli's blockbusters (The Taming of the Shrew and Romeo and Juliet). Why? The actors actually care about what they are doing. If Shakespeare is that difficult, stay with Sheldon Cooper and his gang. The segments there are only three minutes long, and there is, conveniently, a laugh track, so you do not have to wonder if there is a joke you have missed.
This is nothing more than a stage play that was filmed.
I couldn't get into it!
I watched this film for one reason and one reason only and that was Deborah Kerr. I'll be honest in that I wasn't familiar with the play, therefore, had no preconceived expectations. I have to say that the stunning Miss Kerr did not disappoint, however, it was the only three minutes and thirty-three seconds that held my attention in the entire movie. She was convincing in every way. Even the way she moved about the set was captivating. I just love her. However, the movie itself had me imagining if it would have been better if (fill in the blank) were in it. I'm not a Brando fan and I had a hard time believing him reciting Shakespeare. I like James Mason, but felt that there was something quite remote with him as Brutus. I couldn't get a handle on him at all. The story itself if a compelling one for sure and Joseph Mankiewicz was a brilliant, brilliant man, but this movie didn't do it for me. It just could be that Shakespeare just isn't for everyone and I'm one of those people.

The work of Gielgud, Mason and Brando is unquestionably what makes this adaptation uniquely impressive. Mason's work in Brutus' garden on the eve of the Ides of March is memorable, but nothing can compare to Brando's work as Mark Anthony changes the course of Roman history on the stairs of the Senate. If your kids are having trouble with Shakespeare, have them watch this. If they can get over B&W, they should be moved by the power of these three actors and their remarkable performances.
Great Brando performance

It was this movie that opened my eyes to what an incredible actor Marlon Brando was.
Julius Caesar, a great movie like rome itself.
I'am 27 years old and love classic movies. One of my all time favor movies is Juslius Caesar, I love how the actors were able to bring this film to live. I don't understand why is this movie not out on dvd I would buy up in heart beat.
