Noir + Gothic Hybrid
- Doug
- 3/15/10
Sam Wood and the filmmakers of Ivy draw upon film noir and gothic elements to create an atmospheric cinematic world of sinister melodrama. Interesting screen composition always seem to suggest imbalance, though Joan Fontaine's entertaining, robust performance is much more explicitly sinister. Unlike most noir, there is not a lot ambiguous here but the ride is devious fun.

Film Noir at it's best

Joan Fontaine in a Oscar worthy performance as Ivy Lexton, a woman who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. This is a 1947 film and a great one that will hold your attention for the entire length of the film.

Joan Fontaine is outstanding as Ivy Lexton who wants to be a member of the elite class in England. She will stop at nothing to get her way and accomplish her goal. The music is wonderfully eerie and the costumes and photography excellent. Miss Fontaine should have receive at least an Academy Award Nomination for her role.

in this one. Believe song of the same title in soundtrack. Justice in an elevator... Why wasn't this in recent Star-of-the-Month series? I last saw this when it was originally released.
