So-so film

Jean Arthur and Herbert Marshall are in fine form but aren't given all that much to work with. The two gangsters they live with in the film are extremely annoying and really bog the film down. Edward G. Robison and Jack Carson would have made those lines really sing! But one can't have everything.

If You Could Only Cook (1935)

Delightful screwball comedy, surprisingly it is not very well known but it should be. Jean Arthur is wonderful, Herbert Marshall excels in an offbeat role for him. The supporting cast is excellent, especially Lionel Stander, but Leo Carillo is terrific as well, Funny, fast paced and very entertaining. Good screenplay, fine costume design. Light and fun.

Cute Comedy - peculiar title!

I am puzzled by the title, "If You Could Only Cook", as Jean Arthur's character, the cook, was in fact a wonderful cook and much appreciated at Rossini Manor. It's a little scary that a female would be so willing to "pretend marriage" and then go along with the living arrangements that go with such, to a man she just met in the park. I guess that locking the door to the porch means that Jim won't ever need to use the bathroom.? Thankfully, he was a gentleman and played along with her game so that she could be employed. The scenes with Jim learning butler skills from Jennings was rather comical. Cute movie.

I did not personally see the film, but wish I had. I got this review frommy wife and she she said she enjoyed it immensely. And when she enjoys a film as much as she did this one it had to be good. It is very worthy. mike
