Medical student Richard Burrows marries Jody Dennison, who soon becomes pregnant. When she loses interest in sex and begins to gain weight, Richard turns to the willing nurses in the hospital for sexual satisfaction. At a New Year's Eve party, Jody discovers Richard with Sharon, one of his nurse friends, and sternly rebukes him the next morning. The birth of their son does nothing to improve their relationship. Although Richard receives a prestigious position as a surgeon in a Los Angeles hospital, their marriage becomes even more strained when Jody's domineering mother moves in with them. One day at the hospital, Richard meets Helene Donnelly, a beautiful model for television commercials, who brings her husband in for treatment. They begin arranging motel meetings, and both eventually decide to divorce their spouses. Reluctant to abandon his son and newborn daughter, however, Richard makes a last effort to save his marriage; he orders his mother-in-law to leave and sends Jody to a weight reducing spa. Jody returns slim and attractive, but now she insists on the separation. After an unsuccessful attempt to renew his relationship with Helene, Richard begins a shallow existence pursuing nurses and stewardesses.
