After he completes location shooting on his latest movie, western film star Jeffery Carson joins his friend, disgruntled screenwriter G. Gadsby Holmes, on a camping trip in Wyoming. While riding across the range country, which has been beseiged by striking cowboys, Jeffery and Holmes help rancher Joyce Butler in a border confrontation with a pack of vicious cowboys, who are actually part of an Eastern racketeering scheme led by Doc Kramer. Later, the duo is caught camping on the Butler land and is hauled at gunpoint to see Violet Butler, Joyce's aunt and the ranch's crusty owner. Although Violet, who has refused to join Doc Kramer's Cattlemen's Protection Association, is suspicious of Jeffery and Holmes, Joyce vouches for them and offers them jobs. Impressed by Joyce's beauty, Jeffery, who identifies himself only as "Buck," accepts her offer, unaware that he and Holmes are replacing cowboys who were murdered by Kramer's men. During the ranch roundup, Kramer sends a pilot to "buzz" the range and scatter Violet's cattle as part of a scheme to scare Violet into joining his association. After the roundup is halted, Jeffery is approached by Westbrook Courtney, a prissy Eastern "summer" rancher who is in love with Joyce. Jealous of Jeffery, Courtney advises his rival to remember his "station" and not take his flirtations with Joyce too seriously. Later, Courtney stumbles on a "wanted" poster with Jeffery's photograph on it, which had been used as a prop in Jeffery's film, and believing Jeffery to be a fugitive, exposes him to Violet and Joyce. While waiting for the sheriff, Joyce hides the movie star and confesses her love. The sheriff, however, identifies Jeffery as an actor, and an angry, humiliated Joyce orders Jeffery and Holmes off the ranch. Determined to prove himself to Joyce, Jeffery undertakes to catch Kramer's pilot by hiring Joe, a movie stunt pilot, to patrol the Butler land during the next roundup. After a dangerous pursuit, Jeffery and Joe force the gangster pilot to land and confess Kramer's involvement. Jeffery and Joe then flush out Kramer's gang by dropping bombs on their mountain cabin. Convinced of Jeffery's true affection, Joyce forgives him with a kiss.
