  • HSC-So Not A Drag!

I saw "High School Confidential" again on TCM last night 10/14/08 - this has to be one of my favorite Teen movies from the 50's (in fact it was made around the time I was born). Russ Tamblyn (Tony/Mike) best known for his role as Riff in "West Side Story" is great as the undercover cop trying to break a high school dope ring. There are also John Drew Barrymore, William Wellman Jr. and Charles Chaplin Jr., sons of famous fathers, and Mamie Van Doren, who was known for starring in campy B-movies.HSC was one of the first films to deal with a subject (teen drug abuse) that was considered taboo by many in the 50's, and it set the tone for many similar films that would come in the 60's. My favorite scenes are the drag race and the beatnik girl in the cafe singing(?) about how the world is a "major drag". HSC rocks!!!

Cars, chicks, music, cool lingo...and Mamie Van Doren. I love this movie.

Vintage 1950s teen trouble flick. Russ Tamblyn was one of several James Dean replacements then and fits it well. The relationship between Tamblyn and Mamie Van Doren is fascinating and funny and we find out more toward the end. Also, great Jerry Lee Lewis stuff.
