Heartbeat (1946)
- Mr. Blandings
- 5/16/12
A charming Cinderella story with the 35-year-old Ginger turning in a fine performance as an 18-year-old reform school girl. Basil Rathbone is hilariously villainous as the "Fagin" who runs a school for pickpockets. Jean Pierre Aumont is surprisingly good as Ginger's love interest, and Rommie as Flora the little dog is adorable! A little slow-moving in parts but overall an enjoyable film.

This is a delightful film. It presents, like many of the films of an earlier era, a rather improbably plot, but who cares? Ginger Rogers provides a charming performance as a reform-school runaway who finds herself pick-pocketing her way into the heart of a wealthy Frenchman. Basil Rathbone and Adolphe Menjou are their usual compelling selves on screen. Ginger Rogers was magnificent as Fred Astaire's partner, but was equally splendid on her own as an actress. Her beauty was rivaled only by her extraordinary talent. You will want to watch this as part of Rogers' filmography, only to find yourself watching a film that is, if not great, then certainly charming in its own right.
