The Great McGinty
- Dashiell B.
- 2/21/13
A funny political satire that marked the debut of Sturges'. Donlevy is magnificent as a now-barkeep who recants his rise from hobo-to mayor-and govenor, Tamiroff & Demarest give great supporting performances. The Oscar-winning story is unpredictably wild, but lacks the same warmth that would come from his latter films. A funny film nonetheless, well worth the chuckles. I give it a 4/5.

Wonderful Film

After watching this movie for half an hour, I thought this has got to be Preston Sturges. You can hear his voice in the dialogue. Sure enough, it is. I had heard of this movie but never knew it was one of his and had never seen it before. It is now one of my favorites - along with all the rest of his marvelous films. Who is there today to compare to him? He's like the Stephen Sondheim of the movies. Innovative, creative and unmistakable.

The Great Preston Sturges
- Jarrod McDonald
- 2/18/11
A lot of Preston Sturges' other films get continued publicity, but I think this is is his best film. He really examines government corruption in a way that is not only hysterically funny, but points up sad and sobering truths. This is a must-see classic, and it also gives one a greater appreciation for Brian Donlevy's skills as an actor, and for Akim Tamirof, who usually provides excellent supporting work in motion pictures.
