Barrington's men rob the bank and hide the gold in a ghost town. The ghost town's only citizen finds the gold and tries to use it to bet on a boxing match. Seeing the gold, the Mesquiteers rush to the ghost town and recover the rest of it. They need to get it to the bank before it opens but Barrington's men stand in the way.
After Mesquiteers Stony Brooke and Tucson Smith send partner Lullaby Joslin to nearby Prospect to deposit their paycheck, they realize Lullaby volunteered for the duty in order to see the boxing match between Thunderbolt O'Brien and Wild Man Joe Kamatski. Fearful that Lullaby will wager all their money, Stony and Tucson head for town, where the local citizens are arguing about the upcoming fight. Mayor Thornton, who is also the bank president, believes that the fight, which is sponsored by saloon owner Barrington, is bringing bad elements to town. Thornton wants the fight to be canceled, and after a local boy, Tommy, is wounded in a gun battle between two ruffians, the townspeople agree with Thornton. The sheriff then tells Barrington that not only is the fight canceled, but his saloon has been closed and he must leave in forty-eight hours. Barrington is furious and for revenge has his henchmen, Stubby and Buck, rob Thornton's bank. The next morning, when the Mesquiteers deposit their check, Thornton and his daughter Sabina tell them about the robbery and confess they will be ruined if anyone makes a withdrawal. The Mesquiteers then forestall bank patron Mr. Crabtree when he attempts to withdraw money to buy a new suit, and the bank is temporarily saved after Mr. Withers makes a large deposit. Stony then tricks Tucson into agreeing to fight Kamatski, who is looking for a challenger since O'Brien walked out after Barrington's difficulties, so that they can make enough money through betting to help Sabina and Thornton. During the fight, Lullaby sees Jake Rawlins, an eccentric prospector who lives in nearby Nemesis, a ghost town, make a large wager on Tucson. Jake is holding a bag from Thornton's bank, which Barrington and Buck, who hid the loot in Nemesis, also see. Barrington arranges for the lights in the hall to go out, during which time he and Buck leave for Nemesis. The Mesquiteers and Sabina also go to the ghost town, which has been booby trapped by Jake. Barrington's gang arrive, but they are frightened by Jake's ghostly noises and traps. Sabina and the Mesquiteers retrieve the money from Jake and he helps them make their getaway, although the gang pursues them. Back in town, an angry mob accuses Thornton of robbing the bank with the Mesquiteers as his accomplices. The mob is about to attack Thornton when Sabina and the Mesquiteers arrive, force Barrington to confess and return the money to the bank. After the citizens run Barrington out of town, the triumphant Mesquiteers ride off to another adventure.
