The biography of Mohandas Gandhi of India was a great one. Done by the British and Richard Attenborough it was a 3 hour epic of the man who came to lead India out of the British rule by 1947. Gandhi used non-violence as a weapon to effect independence after all "300,000 Brits cannot contain 300 million Indians". As Gandhi Ben kingsley of Britain won the Academy Award as did Director Richard Attenborough who labored as long as 20 years to see this project made. We see Gandhi's non-violent nature stand up to the British authorities who wanted to put him behind bars. Stars like Edward Fox, John Mills, Candace Bergen, Martin Sheen add to the telling of this masterwork which was Best Picture in 1982.
The Oscar-winning labour of love to tell the remarkable story of Mohondas K. Gandhi. The film traces Gandhi's mission to gain India her independence by non-violent means. Kingsley deservedly won an Oscar for his transformational performance as the Indian leader;Bergen, Mills, Gielgud, Sheen give impressive performances as various figures in Gandhi's life. Won 7 additional Academy Awards for Attenborough's direction, Best Original screenplay, Best Film editing, Best Art direction, Best Costume design, Best Cinematography and the big prize for Best Picture. An epic biography in scope and scale. I give it a 5/5.
Few films are 5/5 stars but this is certainly one of them! It should be shown to all of our high school students, as an example of how one man can change the world. It is also a history lesson in every way, exemplifying how the British fear of the Indian people and their attitude toward the Indian people drove the British to extremes in their treatment of them. The policy of non-violence so rich in the telling of Ghandi's story was the same policy used in later years by Martin Luther King and he too was successful for his people, even at the cost of his life. We in the USA had our Wounded Knee and the British had the Amritsar massacre. It is a chilling recounting of that massacre in this film that points to the beginning of the end of British rule in India. Of particular importance is the fight over the partition of India and the creation of the country we now know as Pakistan - a country we hear of almost daily today. Gandhi truly believed this was a travesty, as he had not fought for so many decades only to have his country dismembered. He did not prevail and Muslims were forced to leave their homeland to settle in this new country, a country so rife with violence today. Attenborough fought for 18 years to get this film made and his genius is its magnificence in the story of Gandhi's later years. Ben Kingsley IS Gandhi and, after viewing this film, you cannot possibly believe any other actor - alive or dead - could have played this role as perfectly as Kingsley does. I also commend the use of so many Indian actors in extremely good roles critical to the story.
great fim, misses one problem
Wonderful story of freedom. But not freedom from problems. Brits were treated as snobs and racist, but what do you call the bigotry and racism between Hindu and Moslems? What is worse? There is too much emphasis on one form of bigotry rather than the bigotry that caused far more deaths than the Brits. Pulling apart an empire is easier than putting one back together.

Ben Kingsley is absolutely amazing in the title role. He goes above and beyond in his portrayal. He is brilliant, and it is his performance that helps carry the film through some of the slower stretches. The films main flaw is the unnecessary length. Richard Attenborough does an exceptional job directing. Very detailed, amazingly well produced.
THIS IS A EPIC MOVIE. IT HAS ALL THOSE THINGS THAT MAKE IT A ONE OF A KIND FILM.I FEEL THAT BEN KINGSLEY CAPTURED THE HEART OF THIS LEGENDARY LEADER.WE ALSO GET GREAT ACTING FROM JOHN GIELGUD AND MARTIN SHEEN.IT HAS GREAT LOCATION SHOTS.IT IS A LOOK INTO HISTORY.
