Convicts Nellie and Jane stage a fight to distract their guard, Jed Hicks, and thereby allow gangster Nick Morelli and his sidekick Baldy to help them escape. Because convict Rosemary Walsh is working with Nellie and Jane at the time, Nick, who is Nellie's boyfriend, forces her to escape with them. Once they are a safe distance from the prison, Nick releases Rosemary, a physician who was falsely incarcerated for mercy killing, and she plans to turn herself in. Realizing the futility of her plan, however, Rosemary strikes out in the opposite direction of the prison and eventually stops at a rundown swamp house for a drink of water. There she is graciously welcomed by the Walker family, who is awaiting Dr. Steve Carey because the patriarch, Ben, has broken his leg. Rosemary sets Ben's leg, and Steve is later impressed by her skill. After Steve recognizes Rosemary from news reports, she insists that she was an unwilling escapee, and that she is innocent of mercy killing, as her mortally ill patient had been accidentally overdosed by someone else. Accepting Rosemary's explanations, Steve takes her home and introduces her as Ann Roberts, his new assistant, to his housekeepers, Sarah and Genesis. Steve and Rosemary fall in love, and he proposes after his sister Linda reports that everyone in their small town is gossiping about his female guest. Although fearful that Steve's reputation will be tarnished by her criminal record, Rosemary accepts, but is arrested during the wedding because she used her real name on the marriage license. Steve knocks out deputy sheriff Pete Saunders and helps Rosemary escape and hide, and Pete later arrests him for harboring a fugitive and striking an officer. Rosemary runs away to New York and seeks shelter with Nick and Nellie, unaware of Steve's upcoming trial. Jealous of Nick's attraction to Rosemary, Nellie insists that she accompany them during a robbery, during which Nick is shot. Nellie agrees to release Rosemary if she operates on Nick, but after the successful operation, Nellie refuses to let her go. Rosemary knocks out the gang with ether, then calls the police and reports the gang's hideout. While heading back to Steve's town, her bus crashes, and Rosemary tends to the victims. Steve and Rosemary are reunited at the scene of the accident, and although Pete arrests Rosemary, the governor grants her a full pardon, and Steve is found not guilty. After the trial is over, Steve and Rosemary finally complete their wedding ceremony.
