NOTES

powered by AFI

The working title of this film was The Western Story. Pre-production news items note that Deanna Durbin was first considered for the film's lead, but was eventually replaced because of a conflicting prior commitment. In late 1948 and early 1949, Stephen McNally, Ava Gardner and Howard Duff were announced as the film's stars. Location shooting took place at the Clarence Brown Ranch in Calabasas, CA, according to a February 1949 Hollywood Reporter news item. Houseley Stevenson and Bob Stevenson, who play the same character fifty years apart, were father and son in real life.
