Francis in the Haunted House was the seventh and last film in the "Francis" series. The previous six films starred Donald O'Connor as "Pete Sterling" and Chill Wills as the voice of "Francis," but both actors declined to appear in the last picture. Paul Frees took over the speaking role of Francis, while Mickey Rooney was cast as "David Prescott," a part similar to Pete. According to a December 1955 Hollywood Reporter news item, Universal considered New York actor Jimmie Komack for the role of Pete. Although a Hollywood Reporter item adds Betty Fairfax to the cast, her appearance in the final film has not been confirmed.
