The working titles of this film were Star Light; Star Light, Star Bright; Four Bright Girls; and The Test. Jack Sher's onscreen credit reads "Written and directed by Jack Sher." Art director Ted Haworth's onscreen credit simply reads "Haworth." The opening and closing cast credits are listed in a slightly different order.
According to a Hollywood Reporter news item, Sher based his screenplay for Four Girls in Town on a search that Universal held in June 1954 for a European actress to play Mary Magdalene in the film The Galileans, which was never produced. Gia Scala, who plays "Vicki Dauray" in Four Girls in Town, was brought to America from her native Italy in order to test for The Galileans. According to an April 1956 Los Angeles Times article, Universal cast Helene Stanton, who plays "Rita Halloway" and is seen onscreen only from the back, after seeing her sensuous walk on television. Contemporary sources speculated that the voluptuous, demanding, blonde Rita character was modeled on Marilyn Monroe. Universal borrowed Elsa Martinelli from Kirk Douglas' production company, Bryna Productions. During the scene in which "Mike" and "Kathy" talk on the movie set, actor Jos Ferrer appears in a non-speaking cameo role as a director. Although an April 1956 Hollywood Reporter item adds John Goleenon to the cast, his appearance in the final film has not been confirmed.
