Where's Edma Mae Oliver when you need her?

The Oliver "Miss Withers" films were minor gems, mostly due to her performance. Why they chose Zasu Pitts to act the part is more of a mystery than the one at the center of this minor movie. Pitts doesn't shed her fluttery-scatterbrained persona even though she's supposed to be a crack detective, using some pratfalls and hand gestures that are totally out of character. Gleason repeats his Inspector Piper role without much effort, and it's amazing he lets his friend do so much of the detecting, including tampering with and hiding evidence. Only saving grace is a peek backstage at a musical show, but it's pretty bleahttp://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/75475/Forty-Naughty-Girls/user-reviews.html?view=review#k going all in all.

FORTY NAUGHTY GIRLS may not be the best "Hildegarde Withers Mystery," and the murderer could have been guessed in your sleep, but the continued inspired pairing of ZaZu Pitts (GREED, FRANCIS) and James Gleason (HERE COMES MR. JORDAN, SUDDENLY), along with co-stars Marjoire Lord (MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY) and Tom Kennedy (many classic THE THREE STOOGES shorts) make this a must for classic movie fans......TB
