• Stanwyck in Action

  The plot of this Western is nothing special, but Barbara Stanwyck is. She does all the action scenes herself and the director lets you see that it is really her and not a stunt woman. The supporting cast is fairly good too, but the plot is still hollow. It is basically a vehicle for Barbara-and a good one at that. But what does stand out in this movie is the cinematography and the shots the director Sam Fuller creates. It was pioneering in its days. Today every director copies Fuller.

  When Stanwyck, bathed in black leather, blazes across the screen leading an army of armed fighters, the tone is set for a unique film. Stanwyck's cattle baroness & Sullivan's sheriff tangle for power in an Arizona town. Director Fuller de-glamorizes the west with his unusual angles, but the story is too far-fetched for its own good. Good entertainment worth watching. I give it a 3.5/5.
