Joan Randall, the athletic, popular daughter of society physician Dr. Randall, busies herself doing charitable work for servicemen, hospitalized children and the under-privileged. When Dr. Randall learns about a new polio treatment, called muscle reinnervation, being developed by Tex, an Army major and a former student of his, he invites Tex to move in with his family while he conducts research at a nearby hospital. Joan and Tex are immediately attracted to each other, although Joan is all but engaged to Ricky, her childhood sweetheart. One night, while she and Ricky are performing a specialty dance during a war bond show, Joan collapses and is taken home to bed. Dr. Randall and his father, another prominent physician, are unable to diagnose Joan's condition, but Tex eventually discovers that she has contracted polio. Joan's father and grandfather fail to help Joan with splints and braces, and Joan despairs of ever becoming well again. After Ricky and Joan's uncle Charles convince Tex to take charge of her case, Tex, who had been planning to test his technique on a young boy, goes before the hospital's medical board and asks permission to operate on Joan instead. Feeling that Tex's technique is too chancy, Joan's grandfather and the board turn him down, but when Joan learns of the situation, she, herself, gives Tex permission to proceed. The operation is a success, and Joan regains the use of her limbs. Later, after Tex packs to leave the Randalls for another assignment, he finds Joan waiting for him in his car, and the two declare their love.
