Kind of a redneck "Birdman Of Alcatraz," with gunsmithing substituted for ornithology. That it's about 40% as good as "Alcatraz" is due to director Richard Thorpe's having about two fifths of the cinematic skills of John Frankenheimer (i.e. Thorpe's shots and scenes, unlike Frankenheimer's, have little of interest going on beyond the immediate foreground acting) and Art Cohn's screenplay being a veritable guidebook on how to avoid conflict in drama, by either minimizing it to the point of inconsequentiality (i.e. the struggle between James Stewart and his bible thumping, moralistic dad, which never gets off the ground) or resolving it with 25% of the film still left to go (i.e. the fight between prisoner Stewart and his hard ass prison warden). What saves this film from utter hum drumness are wonderful performances from Stewart as a stubborn, proud moonshiner with a chip on his shoulder, Wendell Corey as the warden, and the always underrated Jean Hagen as Stewart's soft spoken, moralistic but never moralizing wife. C plus.
Fact vs Fiction
This is a wonderful movie, but. as with a lot of true stories, was "Hollywoodized. Here is a great article setting out the "real story". https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2016/4/7/carbine-williams-myth-reality/
INFORMATIVE, ENJOYABLE SHOW
Surprisingly good movie enjoyed by both male and female viewers. Not the most fun to watch prisoners receiving punishment, but most is probably well deserved. Jimmy Stewart does a "bang up" job. Nice to see glimpses of a young James Arness as a Williams brother.

The true story of the making of the carbine rifle used by American troops in World War 2. This is one of Jimmy Stewart's finest performances. It has obviously been overlooked and forgotten as a great film. Wendell Corey does an excellent job portraying the warden in the film. A must for DVD and TCM!
When will TCM show thies movie again ?
A very good James Stewart movie! Kind of reminds me (or vice versa) of Tom Hanks in Castaway.
