Maurice Faugel, who believes he has lost his luck and courage in prison, kills Gilbert, a former friend, to avenge Gilbert's murder of Maurice's girl friend while he was in jail. Maurice escapes just as the men involved in the "Avenue Mozart" robbery arrive seeking Gilbert's services as a fence. Maurice hides at the apartment of Thérèse, his mistress, and they discuss Silien, Maurice's friend and one of the most feared men in the Paris underworld. Silien is suspected of being a "doulos," or police informer, but Maurice refuses to believe these suspicions, and he requests Silien's aid in an apparently easy burglary. Silien delivers the needed tools to Maurice and his accomplice, Rémy, and leaves to telephone Inspector Salignari of the Paris police. He then beats Thérèse into revealing the location of the burglary; subsequently, she is found dead in a smashed automobile. The two burglars are trapped by the police during the theft, and both Rémy and Salignari are killed in a gun battle. Although wounded, Maurice escapes, and, certain now that Silien is an informer, he vows revenge. Meanwhile, Inspector Clain blackmails Silien into revealing Maurice's hideout. Jailed on the charge of murdering Gilbert, Maurice hires another prisoner, Kern, to kill Silien. Meanwhile, Silien conceives a plan to free Maurice and at the same time dispose of two enemies--Nuttheccio and Armand, the "Avenue Mozart" jewel thieves. Silien, aided by Fabienne, an old girl friend who is now Nuttheccio's mistress, murders Armand and Nuttheccio and makes it look as though they killed each other in a fight over the jewels. Maurice is freed, and Silien convinces him that Thérèse was the informer. Later, remembering that Kern is to kill Silien, Maurice goes to Silien's house to stop the murder. Kern mistakes Maurice for Silien and kills him, and when Silien arrives he and Kern shoot each other in a violent gun battle. The identity of the informer dies with them.
