one of the greatest anti war fims ever made. watch how plunket ( james cagney) runs the gauntlet of raw human emotions , caught up in one of the most hellish wars in history. great supporting cast full of irish blarny tragicily and nievely marching off to war . pat obrien is brilliant as father duffy , quiet, dignified (not over acted) watching all hell break loose around him and still keeping faith and dignity. some films go far beyond oscars and reach hopefully our souls.

This is a classic movie and more; if you like history and study WWII this is a great film. The GREATEST generation and the story is superior. Alan Hale give it flavor. Jimmy is simply great!

  • Cagney as Coward

Several things about The Fighting 69th that make it worthwhile. Cagney, of course, is reason #1. Watch the tough guy turn into a manchild (through fear) and then into a hero (through the example of Father Duffy, who was based on a real priest/chaplain who served in WWI). Reason #2: Faith in God is treated with respect rather than disdain. It is hardly likely that the Hollywood of today would allow such a blatant portrayal of faith and redemption. Here, it is done simply, realistically, and to great effect. Another thing that makes it worthwhile, is its realistic portrayal of war.
