Karloff & Daniell
A very human and a most appreciated Henry Daniell role, matched only by Karloff as coachman/body snatcher.Karloff simply wonderful with young girl, very gentle and kind to her.My favorite role in a great movie.
One of Karloff's best
Boris Karloff has a wonderful roll in this movie and he plays it brilliantly. His portrayal of John Gray stands out in my opinion because it's so human and not just another of those terse, brooding, creepy caricatures that he so often played. This is nothing like Ardeth Bay in "The Mummy" or Hjalmar Poelzig in "The Black Cat" to name two examples. Henry Daniell does his usual fine job and is a perfect foil for Karloff. Bela Lugosi rounds out the star power in his brief roll as Henry Daniell's servant. An all star cast, a classic story from a classic storyteller, and great performances.
I've seen this film at least a dozen times and it still manages to be frightening. Excellent acting by all of the cast and the direction is superb. The use of light and shadow adds so much to this film. One of the scenes which never fails to get to me is the incredible rendition of "When Ye Gang Awa, Jaime" by Donna Lee as the Scottish street singer. It is the most haunting tune and her voice is so beautiful. You are not privy to what will come and it makes her all the more sympathetic. I note this film is being aired on Halloween night. Perfect!
Excellent Karloff Thriller(1945)
The blending of Science & Body Snatching makes for a Superb film with John Gray(Karloff) providing the bedlam and Dr. Toddy McFarlane(Henry Daniell) the Science. Robert Wise wonderfully crafts a film of ambiguousness of the moral conflicts to advance Science weighed against the means necessary to advance it. Atmospheric, taught and the ever present conflict of the morality of how to save lives. Chilling creepy scenes especially with Karloff who is at the Top of His Game, just a splendid performance. Joeseph(Bela Lugosi) is another interesting character who is also a victim caught in the web. Daniell provides the perfect task master to organize the process, yet loses control as it all falls apart. 5 stars out of 5. Terrific entertainment.Great Climatic Ending ! Eerie...
I saw this about a year ago. Great movie. Karloff was chillling, along with the doctor. I was glad it's on again tonight!
The Body Snatcher (1945)
- James Higgins
Superb atmosphere, very well directed and the story is excellent. Short, to the point and highly effective thriller. Very good art direction, good editing and a great score. Very well done.
A movie that makes you use your imgination!
Casting is what makes this movie great, Karoloff and Henry Daniell in their verbal tit for tates make outstanding drama. In fact Mr. Daniell steals the Movie!!! All do a great job, especially Robert Wise in his first full lenght directorial film. If you like a think persons horror film, this is it. Let your imgination run wild.
First Rate Karloff, and first rate Lewton
- Oliver Cutshaw
One of my favorite films by Karloff and Lewton. A literate adaptation of Stevenson's work. Excellent early directorial effort by Wise and wonderful cinematography. The street singer killing is both sad and scary and reminds you how Lewton uses the mind to provide the horror. Also as a bit of trivia: it is the last film pairing of Lugosi and Karloff.
Don't Watch this Alone!
This is a very sinister and scary movie, with many unexpected turns in it. The scene where Boris Karloff murders Bela Lugosi is quite shocking and difficult to watch. Truly a macbre film!
