Murdoch Troon, a young Scottish civil servant working in England, meets Claire Chingford, the daughter of the local Lord of the Manor and magistrate, as a result of being knocked down by her father's Rolls-Royce while on an outing with his bicycling club. Freddy Fox, a used-car dealer with whom Murdoch lodges, persuades him that Claire would be impressed if he owned a sports car. After dreaming of being a racing driver, Murdoch purchases a vintage Bentley from Freddy, who offers to teach him to drive if Murdoch will help Freddy acquire the agency for Chingford's motor business. The lesson is a disaster, and they end up in court, where the magistrate is Chingford. After a further mishap in which both Murdoch and Claire end up in the sea, Chingford forbids Murdoch to see his daughter until he has passed a driving test. While taking the test, Murdoch becomes involved in a wild chase of bank robbers; he fails the test but gets Chingford's consent to marry Claire.
