While this DVD represents an opportunity to see a version of Edgar Allan Poe's "Fall of the House of Usher" that is otherwise unavailable elsewhere, it's simply not worth the price of admission. I don't know what the source was for this disc, but the video quality was so poor that I couldnt' make out any of the credits in the opening sequence, and I couldn't even make out the actors' faces except in close-ups. (This on a widescreen HD television connected to a Blu-Ray player.) I would've expected TCM to be selling a high-quality commercial product, but this DVD has all the hallmarks of a bootleg: In addition to the atrocious picture quality, the cover looks like it was printed on a desktop computer, the disc itself is plain silver except for the title in black letters, there is no statement of copyright (although a movie made in 1949 ought to be protected under copyright), and the box advertises the film as "Approx 74 minutes" even though the last 15 minutes are actually trailers for other movies from the 1950s and 1960s. At $29.95, I feel like TCM ripped me off.
