It still amazes me that Cliff Richard, one of the most famous rock stars in Great Britain and other areas of the world, is practically unknown in the U.S. I ran Cliff's American Fan Club in New York City from 1959 until 1964. I met him in 1962 in New York when he came here to perform and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in October, 1962. Not only is he an amazing talent, he is by far one of the nicest people in show business that I have ever met. He's kind, decent, and the antithesis of the "rock star" image cultivated by many of the British, and American, rock stars of the time. "Expresso Bongo" was the first movie I saw Cliff in. The movie is great, because, unlike the Elvis outings that were all fluff and no substance, this movie, guided by the talents of Lawrence Harvey, tells the story of the rise of a rock star and the PR that creates a totally different personality and background for the star than what is their true background. Harvey is great, Cliff is perfect as the budding rock legend, and this film unveils the rock and roll scene in 1959-London. I guess I'm prejudiced about Cliff--I've always felt he was a fine Christian person and an amazing talent--but the movie is certainly fun and historically of interest.

A bit dated, but that almost adds to the interest of the film. Well acted by Laurence Harvey. Some great music, good score.
