Suggestion to previous reviewer: give it a rest. Or try Goodreads. As far as this movie's concerned it's a noble failure with a few affecting scenes, most of them in the first half hour. I think my favorite is that of young Ballard witnessing the start of the invasion of China from his luxury, high rise hotel room.

People in hoopskirts had more respect for Oscar Wilde at "De Profundis" than the modern world would have any respect for J G Ballard at a tribunal inquisition.
Hello America (1981)
Ballard signed an earlier threat notice to film makers with Hello America (1981), that depicts a post apocalyptic Los Angeles with a tribe of monkeys "gibbering and quarrelling with each other like a crowd of producers" around a stale lagoon of the Beverly Hills Hotel while elegant birds are standing on the ends of diving boards "waiting for some talent scout to film them as they stared nonchalantly at the overgrown gardens of the abandoned mansions", it is The Drowned World (1962) that humans are 'either psychopaths or suffering from malnutrition and radiation sickness' and near barren. Ballard is ailing from the comatose of his readers, and festering in foul treachery.
If J G Ballard did not die, he would most probably serve a life sentence with his publisher in prison, because it is difficult to defend his argument about the murder of decadence in Crash. For those that could afford a tangerine, could certainly afford to stuck an orange into Ballard's mouth and drown him in a water basptism trough. That is the best punishment for a sadist that tread on the worst horror at a mango from the Japanese, I think. I have hoped to send J G Ballard to a church for confession first, before his judgement. J G Ballard knew there's God, I believe. It's his own fault to have anything to do with a mango and a Chinese formidable who hasn't a soul at all, from the beginning. That's the difference, maybe. Who cares, there is no need anything, only his family cares.
Mango or Potatoe
Jim is not a child (laugh), he is Ballard's retrospective of the childhood in China that the author could hardly remember his parents' face then, and he knew the names of all the airplanes by their silhouettes because he found them in the encyclopedia that he bought a copy working as a salesman earlier in London! For Jim, they are wondrous machines, free of gravity and free to soar because he imagines himself a genius from young independent of all odds, Ballard's narcissus. Ballard makes a great humor from this autobiography film. However flying inside the war is a metaphor that is also a conflict reminder about his parents that he later had the same troubles inside his own marriage. Ballard also draws an allusion at the conflict of the Chinese imperial dynasty with the revolutionalists that the regime eventually collapsed at the formation of the new republic of the modern Chinese nation. To Jim the atom bomb was God's name in savage cynic, while he thinks it is difficult to decipher the opulence meaning of the Chinese civility that was also cruelty in the palacce ostentatious sacrament. Basie is Jim's father, John Graham in Chinese, and his exchange of piety for friendship with Jim is an absolute sinister distaste to the author, Ballard flinched at the Chinese values that rationalised without the existence of God, Chinese are self-opinioned rustic! Ballard only fell for the mango from the Japanese, because the fruit is a delicacy in China, Ballard believes he would do the same for a potatoe in old Ireland.
