The film was not registered for copyright at the time of its release. However, a video release of the film was registered by Nessa Productions on May 15, 1989 under the number PA-447-220. Although Filmfacts reported that the film was not rated by the MPAA at the time of its release, and the Box Office review described the action in the film as "somewhere between soft and hard core," the MPAA gave the film an R rating in 1973. According to the Box Office review, Blue Money explores the details of casting, performing, shooting and merchandising pornographic movies as well as the personal lives of those involved in it.
Although the October 1972 Box Office review listed the release date as May 1972, the only other review located was Filmfacts. The only confirmed opening was noted in a brief December 12, 1972 Daily Variety news item that reported the film's gross earnings after its first week playing at Penn Theatre in Washington, D.C., as $8,188.
