Seventeen-year-old Birthe arrives home from boarding school earlier than expected and finds her mother, Siv, in bed with Leo, a doctor at the hospital where Siv is chief nurse. Upset by the spectacle, Birthe flees to a discotheque, a hangout for hippies and young "toughs." There Stephen, a young American Negro who is a medical student at the hospital where Siv and Leo work, while keeping an eye on his sister Lisa, a go-go dancer, notices Birthe as a newcomer to the club and is immediately attracted to her. But before he can speak to Birthe, she is picked up by Max, a hippie who takes her to a tenement party where hashish is being smoked and some of the guests are engaging in sex play. Max tries to force himself on Birthe; she fights him off; her bag falls to the floor and an erotic photo of her mother drops out. Birthe is accused of being a lesbian. While she is struggling to retrieve the photo from her tormentors, Stephen appears and rescues her. Stephen takes her to the apartment he shares with Lisa and privately announces his intention to marry Birthe. Lisa scorns his hopes of marrying a white woman. Actually, Lisa, a lesbian, intends to compete with her brother for Birthe's affection. Lisa achieves partial success and seduces Birthe, but she eventually loses when Birthe concludes that she was over-reacting to her mother's sexuality, and she decides that she loves Stephen. They are married, and Siv confesses to Leo that she is disturbed by her daughter's marrying a Negro.
