OMG, but this is a stinker! How did it ever get made? Didn't someone, during the filming of it, recognize that Keefe Brasselle's Cantor is hilariously grotesque? How did the other actors (or the crew) keep a straight face? The popping eyes, the effete overlay?

I saw this movie for the first time last night. The casting was perfect! To be able to find work during the depression was a gift and so was Eddies ability to make people smile. I'm glad that he got a chance to smell the roses.

I really like this movie. I know, it bombed when it came out and Eddie Cantor himself said ,If that was my life, I never lived. It starts out very strong with Eddie and the street gangs roaming around the lower east side of old New York getting into trouble and follows an honest historical story line. Then it starts to get into that old Hollywood fiction thing rather than stick to facts. Sadly, I don't recall it even mentioning , George Burns and Gracie Allen or Al Jolson to mention a few. More should have been said about Eddies tireless work for charities, such as the March Of Dimes and Boys Club Of America, to name a few. I thought the guy who played Jimmy Durante was a riot and Very little was shown re. Eddies movies, that are shown on T.C.M. Like The Jolson Story, this movie rolls along with fact and fiction blended together and maybe that's a good thing. I remember Eddie on TV back in the early 50s still going strong, and a fun show to watch.
