Will Rogers Festival please
- Will Fox
- 6/10/15
Folksy humorist and political pundit, (promoting individualism vs. political hypocrisy), Will Rogers' irreverent wit won a national following, as one of the most beloved performers on radio, stages and films. Rogers made 48 films during the silent era. Then he gained greater success in 12 talkie comedies, debuting in 1929 "They Had to See Paris." Additional charming classics include: "A Connecticut Yankee" (1931), "State Fair" (1933), in 1934 "Doctor Bull" and "Judge Priest," plus in 1935 "Steamboat Around the Bend,""In Old Kentucky," "Life Begins at 40," and "Doubting Thomas." Articulate American Will Rogers' remains remarkably relevant and refreshing. Please broadcast a festival of his feature films. Thanks TCM.

A funny and feel-good film from Ford. Rogers excels as the title character whose reputation and discoveries are challenged by stereotypical and apathetic citizens. The story drags for too long and feels like a Frank Capra film as far as the story is concerned. An okay film at best from Ford. I give it a 3/5.
