Cute, silly vintage rom-com
- Chapelan Alexis
A cute, silly British rom-com, this is the epitome of early playful romances, and in many respects a genuinely uplifting endeavor. The lack of psychological acuity or introspection is easily forgiven, and the film advances at a sufficiently confident pace as to conceal any narrative uncertainties or missteps. All in all, The Divorce of Lady X stands out as a smoothly orchestrated relic from the past, which has endured remarkably well the passing of time.Read complete review at: http://movie-database.e-monsite.com/pages/anglo-saxon-cinema/the-divorce-of-lady-x-1938.html
This movie is fun and silly. Olivier is so young in this film and is adorable - I've always thought him very attractive, but here he was actually "cute" and it was nice to see a lighter side of him come through. Oberon's character was a little annoying at times, but her game worked in the end. Ralph Richardson is terrific as well - he brings a great sense of humor to the mix. The whole set up is a bit ridiculous, but it's a light 1930's type of romantic comedy - complete with two very different definitions of what it is to be a woman!
Definitely an adorable Technicolor film. It's a cute romantic comedy with a bit of a risque plot. I would surely recommend it for folks who like movies in the 1930s or romantic comedies.
In spite of the irate comment posted above, this film has NOT been colorized. It's an example of early Technicolor (see the original print info), and TCM's print is in top condition. The sense of humor here is very Thirties, but Oberon and Olivier have oodles of star power, beauty, and charm. For those of us who like this sort of thing, it's a frothy delight!

Black and white movies SHOULD NOT BE COLORIZED. I am disappointed that TCM would show such an piece of film. You make a big deal about not panning & scanning but this is changing the movie as well. It should be shown as it was made.
TCM gives this movie the respect it deserves.
Had the chance to compare the TCM showing with one shown on a public television network, and the TCM version just blows the other one away. Brighter colors, cleaner details, and uncut! Props to TCM for giving their viewers the best available. Hope TCM shows it again real soon.
I absolutely love it for the comedy side.I am not in any way a romanticist and I love it !!Thank you for showing it!!!~~Catherin
My favourite classic romantic comedy!!
It's funny, romantic, and Laurence Olivier's performance is the sexiest I've ever seen!
One of the greatest romantic comedies ever
T.C.M. please get hold of this movie and release it on DvD.If found, please restore it.Thanks.
SHAME it is only on VHS
One of my most favorite movies, it is only available on VHS, so if it isn't released on DVD, it will not be available. So good to see such a "young" Laurence Oliver and Merle Oberon in this very light hearted little film, always a pleasure to view!It is so very sad to see so many classic movies, not as widely viewed as others, disappear as if they never were.I always enjoy this one, but the quality of my VHS is fading. Please release this to DVD!
