I'm a HUGE Hitchcock fan, but I think this film may out-suspense anything that the Master ever created. From the moment of the "crime", the suspense is incredible! And the ending: WOW! One of the greatest twists in film history. Do yourself a favor and see one of the best thrillers ever!

Here's my ending: as the Quick embrace, the Dead removes her dead-style lenses and signals the Inspector to enter.Ta-da! Fini.

More twists and turns than a cobra on acid, this Hitchcockian study of various degrees of amorality and violence, set in a French provincial boarding school from hell, is one of the great psychological suspense films of all time. Pacing, acting, and writing are all first rate. Director Henri Clouzot shows himself to be worthy of The Master himself with two hours plus of disturbing, nail biting action that feels like ninety minutes. And this could well be the great Simone Signoret's best performance. Think Stanwyck in "Double Indemnity" and take it up a notch or two and you have it. Also memorable are Vera Clouzot (the director's wife) as Signoret's guilt haunted partner in crime, Paul Meurisse as the utterly despicable, abusive victim of Signoret and Clouzot's machinations, and Charles Venal as the slouching, cigar chomping, disingenuous police inspector. An added plus is a wonderfully profane, out of control bunch of bored, long suffering school kids who comment on the goings on and in one instance is crucial to them . Let's give this one a well deserved A.
A landmark film
When Robert Osborn was still with us, I saw this film on TCM hosted by him and Drew Barrymore. Drew commented how Diabolique inspired Alfred Hitchcock to make Psycho. I'm betting he's not the only one to have studied it. If you get to watch, take note of Charles Vanel's portrayal of Inspector Fichet and see if it doesn't remind you a bit of Peter Falk's Columbo. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as they say. It's a landmark thriller for sure. I only wish I understood French so I could catch all the nuances of performance instead of having to speed read the subtitles. I think they whiz by a bit too quickly at times.
A Fantastic Masterpiece Of Suspense!
