A white-washing of American history.
This is pure WWII propaganda, perpetuating the myth of America's "manifest destiny" to stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific as a white nation. The narrator marginalizes the Native Americans by referring to the continent as "empty" before the first white people (Leif Erickson) to "discover" America. Every one of the immigrants shown as coming to the US are white European. No mention is made of the treatment of the Irish, Italians, and other non WASPs once here. The Civil War is mentioned only as a war to save the Union. Slavery is ignored and not one black person is shown. The KKK would be proud of this film.
AMAZING So very relevant today!
I wish this could be shared on social media
Inspiring "I Am An American"
- Louis Kanowsky
After watching a James Stewart movie, I was surprised by the short film "I Am American" since the subject was a family with my last name. While the story is not about a real family, it is real in its depiction of immigrants and their love for America. I hope TCM can show this film again so others can see it.
I AM an American
- Roland Oliva
Short movie. But yet inspirational. It may be reflect upon my family Cuban descendent. They also came with of same principle of working hard and participating in the American culture. This movie does reflect upon many American today who have some sort of family descendent that came from other country. I hope many other people find this movie as inspirational as I have.
I Am An American - Today
This was a wonderful short. If only society today was as passionate about our country as the Kanowski family.
