Superintendent Whiteside of Scotland Yard deduces that a homicidal maniac is at large when several people are found murdered in London, each with a daffodil placed across his body. Airways security agent Jack Tarling and his detective friend Ling Chu, however, connect the killings with a Hong Kong dope-smuggling ring which they have come to London to investigate. Their theory is confirmed when heroin is found concealed in a shipment of artificial daffodils delivered to a mercantile firm headed by Raymond Lyne. Police discover that all of the murder victims were members of the Cosmos Club, and it is learned that Lyne had recently persuaded Jan Putek, the owner of the club, to hire a drug-addicted ex-convict named Peter Keene. Lyne has kept Keene supplied with heroin in exchange for his services as a hired killer. Lyne, the chief suspect, is found murdered, followed by Putek, Lyne's wife Gloria, and Oliver Milburgh, the manager of the club. Whiteside discovers that the daffodil killer's next victim is to be Anne Rider, Lyne's secretary. The insane Keene lures her to a cemetery and drags her into a mausoleum. Ling Chu, waiting in the shadows, springs from his hiding place in time to trap and knife the killer. Anne is led out of the cemetery by Jack Tarling, who has fallen in love with her.
