Cute and snappy romantic-comedy, with a fabulously charming performance by Ronald Colman. Loretta Young is also very good, and George the dog is adorable! ****/*****

  • The Devil To Pay is a pure delight !

Colman is perfectly charming in this early sound film, and has all the qualities that made him so enjoyable to watch throughout his fine film career...it is a very light hearted in contrast to his mostly serious films later on in the late 30's and early 40's. The scene where he "charms the pants" off his father, who was ready to throw him out of the house, and winds up giving Willie 100 is the actor at his best! What a great film! I also love the line when Willie is auctioning off his household stuff in East Africa....when a pretty girl bids on his bed, he sells it to her proclaiming "it's yours...I've always wanted you to sleep in it" Great stuff!

A surprisingly sophisticated and enjoyable early talkie. The plot is a virtual "how to" for romantic comedy, but it was so very fresh when it was done here and somehow still retains that vitality. Ronald Colman is sparkling and perfect....his performance light years ahead of usual early talkie technique and with the same charm and talent that he lent to all his films. Loretta Young and Myrna Loy are both lovely and their performances are good, but both are much more in the style of the time. Their potential, though, is readily evident. Altogether, a delightful film.
