  • Rommel The Heroic Figure

    • Rommel

Whatever his true fate,he was a true hero whether he was a German officer or not,James Mason was a great actor.

  • Mason is no Rommel!

There is something terribly disconcerting about hearing an English speaking actor with the quality of a voice like James Mason's playing a completely German war hero. It just doesn't work for me. The fact that the entire cast is English speaking doesn't help matters either. There are much better war films which depict Germans speaking German but with English translation to help those of us who don't speak German. btw: Rommel's death was not gory. He simply took a cyanide pill and died in the back of a car. He was even able to bid aufwiedersehen to his wife and children beforehand. He was spared the ignominy of hanging because Hitler didn't wish to incur the wrath of the German people for killing their hero and Hitler was on a vendetta against Rommel for Rommel being involved in the attempted assassination of the man. The other officers in the attempt against Hitler did not fare nearly as well as Rommel did with the cyanide and their families didn't fare as well as Rommel's did either.

  • A Hero To more Than Just His People

The first time I saw this movie I thought Rommel's death was a bit fictionalized. I thought "Come on, it couldn't be that melodramatic!" In reality it was even more melodramatic. The way Rommel's death is presented in this movie is actually toned down from the truth.

  • Desert Fox

    • Mike
    • 4/30/10

Among the best of the WWII genre. Luther Adler is the definitive Hitler, with wonderful screenplay and acting.
