This excellent film, shot on location among the ruins of postwar Germany, gives a realistic view of the desperate final days of WWII. The acting and screenplay are amazingly devoid of the Hollywood cliches that envelope so many World War II movies of the era. This film provides a gripping and gritty portrayal of people caught up in the Nazi catastrophe with superb realism. The ease with which Oskar Werner brings the character of "Happy" to life is both believable and compelling. Supporting actors Richard Basehart and Gary Merrill turn in solid performances as war-weary soldiers struggling to carry out missions that are distasteful but necessary for final victory. The pervasive shadow of war and death provides a menacing backdrop for the character study that is central to the cinematic theme. There is plenty of tense drama and action to move the film along and a full measure of suspense that unfolds from the beginning to the very end. Clearly, a "thinking man's" war film without the false bravado and heroic schmaltz that taints other films of the genre .

this was an amazing film. Oskar Werner in his American film debut as a German POW who decides to fight for the right thing. I loved him in this, so young and innocent, but never naive. Truly an amazing film. I hope TCM shows it soon. I only saw it once on AMC, and would love to see it here.

It was very stimulating to see the Nurnberg and Wurzburg of 1951 as I was stationed in Wurzburg in 1970. I visited Nurnberg and there were two other scenes in the movie I recognized, but could not identify. The Hauptbahnhof and the old tower in Nurnberg were standouts as were the statue, Festung Marienberg and the Alt Sankts brucke (Old Saint's Bridge)were shocking.
