Young Billy May saves Tennessee Thompson from the Indians of the Dakota Bad Lands, and together they travel to the town of Deadwood in the Dakota Territory. The townspeople mistake Billy May for Billy the Kid and place bets on his impending fight with Wild Bill Hickok. In the meantime, Tennessee has purchased a gold claim, but his partner, Billy, is captured during an Indian raid. When they reach the Indian camp, Billy meets his father, Boone May, an ex-Confederate soldier who has joined the Indians in hopes of destroying Custer's troops and establishing a new Confederate state. Billy also meets and falls in love with Little Bird, a young Indian woman. Later he escapes from the camp and shoots two outlaws who have raped Little Bird. By the time he returns to Deadwood, Wild Bill Hickok has arrived, but when Hickok learns Billy's true identity, he decides not to fight him. A young boy, Hubert, tricks Billy into a gunfight, however, and Billy shoots the boy in self-defense. He is hunted down and lynched by a mob of townspeople; when Preacher Smith tries to intervene, he is also shot.
